Caring for Carpet

Caring for your carpet to keep it looking great longer is a task that isn't that difficult, it just takes a few extra precautions and vacuuming your high traffic areas a bit more often.

What are the precautions you should take in caring for your carpet?

It is recommended that you take your shoes off before walking across carpet, but leave your socks on. The natural oils that your feet leave behind when walking across carpeted areas actually attract dust and dirt to the those spots.

When moving furniture be sure that you have plastic slides on the feet of your furniture, this will help to keep the wood or metal from snagging the carpet when your furniture is moved. If you have an office chair you will want to put down one of the plastic mats made for office areas over your carpet.

If you are noticing loose fibers in your carpet, you will want to trim those, if left loose your carpet can unravel, and those fibers will be caught by the vacuum cleaner and more damage can be caused.

How should you clean your carpet?

If you have a high traffic area, you will need to vacuum the carpet at least 3 times a week, this prevents the dirt and grime from building up. When dirt is left in your carpeting for extended periods of time, it can build up and create stains and areas in your carpet that are harder to clean. You will want a vacuum cleaner that is best for your needs and that is easy for you to operate. Be sure to choose your vacuum cleaner to fit you and your home.

If you have a spill or a stain you will want to clean it immediately. The longer it sits the more it will soak in. For spills blot up as much of the spill as you can, rubbing will cause the fibers to unravel or be damaged. If you have frequent accidents on your carpet, then you may want to invest in spot cleaner for your carpet like one of  Bissel's spot cleaners.

It is also a good idea to have your carpets professionally cleaned about once a year, this is great to do during spring cleaning.
