Summer/Fall Maintenance: 5 Prep for Winter Tips

Here are some tips to help you ensure that your home is ready for the winter. This is not an exhaustive list by any means, just some tips to help get you started.
  1. Check your roof for damaged, loose, or missing shingles. If there are any repair them or hire someone to repair them. Snow and/or heavy rains can start leaking into your home if your shingles are damaged.
  2. Have your heating system tuned by technician. This will help it meet its manufacturer rated efficiency and could help you save money on the heating bill. It will also help prevent issues that could cause you to lose the heating system.
  3. Caulk and add weather stripping around windows and doors. This helps to keep drafts at bay.
  4. Clean your gutters. While cleaning be sure there aren't any areas that are damaged, if so they will need to be repaired.
  5. Trim any plants or bushes that are close to your house. You will want to be sure that 1 foot away from the exterior walls is cleared. If there are tree limbs growing within 5 to 6 feet of your home you will want to trim those back. Also make sure you get debris away from the foundation and corners of the home.
